I see a lot of spammy or bot type leads come through our campaigns. Some of them have the same names, cities or other fields. I would try to block from IP, but I think the bots dynamically generate the IP address so its hard to track. Having the ability to have a blocking area where I could enter in the fake names, cities, etc that are in my forms, would prevent them from being submitted.

Hi Jay - it looks like that might be an actual person. It still could be a spammer, but it appears to be someone who actually filled out your form.
The automation we have set-up should catch almost all automated spam from bots, but an actual person won’t trip the spam trap.
We’ve got a second automation running that looks for know spam IPs (based on regular monitoring of a few different sources), so it is possible that you’ll see one off “spam” leads like that occasionally.
We’ve also gotten some over the weekend.

I just wanted to give another update to everyone here to let you all know that Derek, from our Platform team has a post up on our Inside Unbounce blog that goes into some more detail about how our new anti-spam tools work and also gives a visual of the amount of spam we’re able catch now that both tools are live compared to previously when we were manually blocking reported IPs: http://inside.unbounce.com/product-de…
Hi Ryan – We have included the capacity to manually blacklist IP addresses in this new system we are rolling out. It will take some time for us to adjust the different parameters our detection algorithms rely on, so we wanted to make sure that we’ll have a way to “override” the system.
So please do keep sending us IP addresses from which you’ll still be receiving spam, as it will allow us to tune our system.
So this is all automatic on your end? We won’t have a place to “report bad IP’s” or the ability to submit to a blacklist?

Hi Everyone - I wanted to give an update about where we’re at with this. We’ve got a two part solution that we’ll be rolling out in parallel this week.
Part one detects form spam and filters that response out from your leads database, so you won’t see it in “view leads”, it won’t be exported via the .csv, and it won’t fire any integrations. Our Dev team has nicknamed it “the Bear Trap”.
The second part, which has been dubbed “the Reputator” looks for IPs that are hammering your Unbounce pages and adds those IPs to a block list filters them out of your page stats. Because IP spoofing and also IP reassignment happens, IPs will actually roll off the block list periodically and if they’re still behaving badly, they’ll roll back onto the block list.
When we get things up and running initially, these two systems will be running in parallel, so if a spam form fill is from a single IP and that IP also doesn’t hammer your page with hits, the form will will be blocked, but that page hit will still count.
In the coming weeks, we’ll be linking the two systems together so the Bear Trap triggers the Reputator’s blocking automatically. And as time goes on, we’ll continue tweaking things, so the filtering/blocking gets even better.
We’ll be monitoring very closely to ensure there aren’t any major issues, but if you do notice any strange behaviour (or have any other questions), please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us here or via support@unbounce.com.
Thanks again to everyone for their patience as we worked up a solution that will both cut down on spam, but also make sure no one loses leads (which is the last thing we’d want). I know this is a major issue for a lot of you out there and I’m super excited that we’re able to get what we think will be a great solution out this week.

Hi Kristy - we’ve actually finished up all of the coding work for this just yesterday. We’ll be turning things on today and monitoring (to make sure there aren’t any issues) and making some adjustments throughout the week. But barring any major issues (which we don’t expect at this point), you should see form spam vastly decreased later on this week.
Any update on a timeline for this? We are literally getting hundreds of spam form completions a day now - it’s crazy!
We’ve had to use hidden fields and drop the enquiry at the destination via the webhook just to keep our sales teams sane, I hope to see a fix rolled out natively soon.

In the meantime i’m going to start a support ticket for you so we can review your issue further. Depending on the situation there may be things we can do in the meantime.
Any progress here? I am still getting hammered by my team to the point where I cant even have the leads sent to our clients anymore. I have to send them to someone internally and they filter through them and forward on the leads that are not spam. Unbounce is in the last few days of keeping us as a client. I need mobile versions, some time of image gallery / rotation and most of all I need spam prevention. While the templates are not as nice, I get all of the above from Weebly which I was attempting to transition away from but might need to go back to.

Hey Simon - I believe we’ll be filtering the entire form fill and related stats. This won’t catch when a bot that we don’t already filter simply hits the page and doesn’t fill out the form however.
The latter is something we’re investigating as well though.
Interesting - will this have any effect on the accuracy of visitor counts? Or will those also be removed posthoc?

I just wanted to update this thread to let everyone know that we’ve been doing some heavier testing on our live servers.
One of the methods we’re testing is similar to what Joe mentioned above, but with a little twist to get around the limitation with validation that I mentioned. Rather than attempt to reject or block the spam submission entirely, if we catch a bot that’s filled out our hidden alert form field, we actually accept the submission to make them think they’re getting through and then use some filtering to prevent it from showing up in your conversion/leads details.
We’re turning it off and on over the coming days and monitoring to ensure there’s no performance issues and that we aren’t accidentally filtering any good leads. Once we’re confident that there’s no major issues, you’ll see it rolled out across our page servers, which could happen as early as this week.

Hey Eric - we just spoke over email, but I wanted to answer here as well in case anyone was wondering the same.
Akismet would be a tricky solution for a few reasons. For one, they’ve developed plug-ins for quite a few services, but not Unbounce, so either, they would have to do that or we would have to leverage their API to build one, but in either case, we’d still need to negotiate a partnership with them to offer that plug-in on an official basis. The other issue is that Akismet is designed for public comments and forums, while Unbounce pages that contain forms are primarily for lead generation–information that’s most often meant to be kept private, which opens up some larger issues for many users around data collection.
Certainly, Akismet as a solution wouldn’t be impossible, but it wouldn’t necessarily be a quicker fix either.
Perhaps allow us to simply add our Askimet keys?

Hi Joe and Alberto,
We’re still doing additional load testing. I know I mentioned that a month ago, but one thing we want to be absolutely certain of is that rolling out a spam solution won’t slow down the actual app at all, so we’re erring on the side of caution when it comes to the load testing.
With that said, you can expect something in the next 2-6 weeks (depending on how this last planned round of testing scenarios goes). It will be automatic IP filtering, but unlike what’s mentioned above, it will filter the IP from stats and also block that IP from adding additional entries in your leads. We’ll be rolling it out with relatively loose criteria at first (so we don’t block any legitimate entries by mistake) and then tweaking the solution every couple of weeks to improve it going forward.
Joe: the hidden field option unfortunately won’t work in exactly the way you’ve described. In the same way bots can enter invalid values as email addresses or leave out required fields all together, they could still submit a form, even if they filled out a value on that hidden field, as they’re circumventing the actual form validation itself.
Unbounce team we really need a solution ASAP, I’m getting more than 10 SPAMS PER DAY on one of my landing pages, this is annoying!! And I don’t see any actions from your side, just comments that this will be fixed someday
Unbounce. You need to solve this. IP filtering as others are suggesting isnt going to help and CAPTCHA solutions that require input are bad as well. You need to bake a hidden text field into every form that doesnt have to be touched by anyone. When you process the form submission simply check to ensure that field is blank. Bots fill out the form because it is in the HTML, people dont because it is hidden. Reject anything that has a value in that field and you will solve a lot of issues. Also, please make these things mobile friendly, about to go back to Weebly.
