Tracking Form Submissions with GTM

In Google Tag Manager, our conversion tags are triggered by a visit to the form confirmation page. Unfortunately, we are having a problem with display advertising fraud. I suspect bot networks are simply launching our thank-you page – without filling out the form – and triggering our conversion tags. How can I create a trigger that only fires the form is successfully submitted using Google Tag Manager? The native GTM integration appears to fire this kind of event: The native integration via Script Manager will automatically place the GTM code on your pages. This will not automatically send the form submission event to GTM, but will allow you to set up a listener within GTM to capture the form submit data layer. Pre-Fill Form Select Fields with URL Parameters

The Pre-Filling a Form with URL Parameters feature works great for text fields. I’d like this feature expanded to select fields, such as dropdown fields. It’s fairly simple to do with jQuery. I modified the form’s javascript to make it work. I haven’t tested it extensively since I don’t have direct access to the Unbounce code base, but it should work fine. Compress Images before Uploading to CDN

I’m not sure if you are doing any kind of image compression before uploading images to the CDN. By either starting or improving the compression, you can help speed up page load times and lower your bandwidth cost. That’s a win/win for everyone! I just uploaded an image that was automatically cropped and resized (so I know there is some processing going on already). The published version of the image is 302kb. I ran that same image through https://compressor.io/ and it compressed it to 53.7kb… or 82% smaller. That’s a huge difference! Think about doing that for every image on Unbounce. There are tons of tools out there to do this. You can pay for a pre-packaged product: http://www.jpegmini.com/server Or use some libraries. Here is a list that a tool called ImageOptimuses: JpegOptim, jpegrescan, jpegtran, PNGOUT, Zopfli, Pngcrush,AdvPNG, extended OptiPNG, and Gifsicle.

Binding External Conversion Tracking to Scroll Event

At the Call to Action conference, Joanna Wiebe gave a presentation about only giving each element of a landing page one job. Since watching this, I’ve been inspired to measure micro-conversions rather than form submissions. I’ve already started measuring clicks to the form page rather than form submissions. But I’d like to test some header treatments and think measuring scroll events would get the the best results. Page Speed Initiative

I would love to see Unbounce take on an initiative to speed up our landing pages. Having a fast website is not optional anymore…it is essential! If you aren’t already, you should be measuring all of our page load times (particular high latency environments such as mobile). Then you can monitor how development impacts page speed over time. Some Suggestions: Consolidate External JavaScript - Currently Unbounce has 6 external scripts loaded from 2 different Unbounce domains. On mobile, the latency for downloading these files slows the page substantially. These are loading in the head, which blocks the rest of the page from loading. Better Font Handling/Suggestions - I recently discovered some of my pages were loading fonts which were not being used. Fortunately, Unbounce Support was great and helped me remove them. But I can’t help but wonder how many other users have too many fonts on their pages. To help other users, the fonts currently used on the page should be highlighted at the

Simple Solution for Image Compression and Retina Images

This is an attempt to solve 2 major problems for Unbounce: Blurry Images on Retina Displays Images aren’t Optimized for Page Speed Honestly, I think it would be pretty straight forward to bake these into Unbounce. But it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen anytime soon. In the mean time, can you add basic support for image optimization services like the following? https://www.resrc.it/ https://responsive.io/ It is very straight forward to use either of these services: Add the javascript include that does all the heavy lifting. Change images to use “data-src” attribute instead of “src” Add a class to the image. That’s it! Now I know what you are thinking… “Just use the add custom HTML.” But I want to SEE my images as I’m working on my page. Do you have a hack day coming up? Put 2 hours into it and throw it in the “Labs Features” section. You would be heroes!!!

Bug Report - Line Height Overwritten in Nested Span

When line height is applied using a <span>, any child <span> will cause the page-defaults.css to overwrite the line-height with a “0” value. Below is the problematic code. I don’t know if I wrote it or not, but the new Text Editor does not correct it. <span style="font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"> <span style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;">Text</span> </span> Many modern browsers appear to ignore this scenario. But IE 6-7 do not ignore it and sets the line-height to 0 (tested using BrowserStack). I have also noticed it on some of my co-workers newer version of Internet Explorer as well. The result is a very ugly broken page: The fix is simple, the line-height needs to be the most inner <span>. This issue does bring up a deeper concern. Unbounce should not be styling text using inline spans. Inline styles is a result of lazy WYSIWYG design. Why don’t we have a way to set page level header (<h1>,<h2>…) and paragraph (<p>

Dynamically Reorder Sections

Has anyone figured out a method to reorder sections using URL parameters? One of my best performing keywords in paid search is “hvac salary”. For this one keyword, I’d like the salary section moved to the top of the page. For other searches, I want this section towards at the bottom. It would be sweet to pass a URL parameter (“SectionOrder=salary”) that would move the salary section to the top! Maybe I can rework the code from the following guide: Creating a Fixed Header/Footer (aka Sticky Header).

View External CSS in the Editor

I’ve been using Unbounce for a few years and one thing has always bugged me. Why does CSS have to be inline? I have 34 tags on my page. Why can’t I declare common tag styles once? p { color: #66666; } I could use the embed stylesheets feature, but it doesn’t load in the editor. Any styles there are invisible when editing, which is a deal breaker.

Dynamic Text Replacement - Ignore if Blank?

I’d like to move all my AdWord’s Upgraded URL tracking templates to the campaign level. The only thing preventing me from doing this is some ads have Dynamic Text Replacement, but not all. I thought I could move Dynamic Text Replacement tags to custom parameters. But if not all tags have the Dynamic Text Replacement tags, then the text goes blank on my landing page. Is there a way I make my landing page ignore blank Dynamic Text Replacement tags? If the landing page is… http://www.mylandingpage.com/?dynamictext= The “dynamictext” variable is ignored by Dyncamic Text Replacement.

VWO Form Analytics doesn't Work

Visual Website Optimizer recently launched a series of new features called Visitor Behavior Analysis: https://vwo.com/blog/vwo-acquires-navilytics-to-offer-visitor-behavior-analysis/ I’m loving the Heatmaps and Visitor Tracking… but it’s not detecting my Unbounce form in the Form Analysis feature. It’s still in beta, so bugs are to be expected. Anyone else using this tool? Have you gotten it to work?

HOW TO: Use VWO or Optimizely instead of Unbounce's A/B Test

Unbounce’s A/B Test reporting left me desiring more. Specifically: Track Multiple Goals Segment Report (i.e. desktop vs mobile visitors) I still want to build the variation in Unbounce, rather than using VWO’s editor. This is so I don’t have to rebuild the variation in Unbounce in the event the test is successful. Step 1: Make your variation in Unbounce. You’ll want the “Weight” to be 0% on the new variant, since we aren’t using Unbounces A/B test. Unfortunately, the variant won’t publish unless it has “Weight”. To get around this, temporarily set the weight of the new variant to 1%, publish the page, then revert it back to 0% and publish once more. Step 2: Install VWO’s code You can use the Global Scripts to make it easier, or just put the code on the page scripts. Make sure it is on all variations and confirmation pages. Step 3: Configure Split URL Create a “Split URL” campaign in VWO. For the control, set it to the Unbounce page URL. For Variation 1, use the page URL + the vari

BUG: Editor Crashes when Rendering Large Images

Screencast below: I’ve noticed this in the past, but I thought it was a minor issue. But today, I’m not even able to open the page editor. We have some very large images and I prefer using the largest size possible so I have the most flexibility with resizing and masks. This one is 10 mb with original dimensions of 5638 x 3758. As you can see, I was able to upload and save the page with the image, but I’m no longer able to Edit the page (even to remove the image) without the page crashing.

Option to Render "Custom HTML "

This is an alternate solution to the following issue: Simple Solution for Image Compression and Retina Images Besides the use case in the previous conversation, I’d also like to start transitioning to using SVGs for many of my images (for the many benefits). Since IE8 is the main browser that doesn’t support SVG, I predict as IE8 usage drops SVGs will gain in popularity. Ideally, I’d just include it as straight code with Unbounce’s “Custom HTML” feature so it loads fast (fewer http requests) and allows me to apply CSS to the SVG (so I can change color without an image editor). I get the desired result in the preview or published version of my page: But the html doesn’t render when editing, making it hard to visually design the page: I’m sure you have your reasons for not rendering these HTML blocks. But is there any way you can at least add an option to render the HTML? There is plenty of room in the Customer HTML properties panel for this option. How about a little check box that s

A/B TEST RESULTS: Security Site Seal

If you use SSL, you are also able to use a Security Site Seal. I decided to test the effectiveness of this seal. My hypothesis is that adding the seal next to the submit button on my form would increase trust and improve conversion rate. This hypothesis was proven incorrect by the test. Help! My new page rocks sometimes but not others. Why?

OK fellow Unbouncers… I’m out of ideas… my team is out of ideas. Time to see if you can help solve this mystery. Back Story My hypothesis is moving the form to a second page will increase conversions by offering a smaller commitment (click on button) before a bigger one (fill out a form). To do this test, we needed a completely new landing page design. Moving the form to a second page will also lead to faster A/B testing because I can test the page based on click through rate, which has more “conversions” than form submissions. For instance, instead of testing 1000 visitors / 10 conversions (form submission), the same test would be 1000 visitors / 100 conversions (button clicks). If you do the math, you can reach statistical significance faster with the 100 conversions even though it’s the same number of visitors and same relative difference between variations. Saving Doesn't Work Properly if the Text Editor is Open

Replicate: Open a page to edit Click on a text element to open the text editor. Click on the “Source” button in the text editor. Change some text. Click the “Save” button on the page. Click back to the page summary and click Republish. Expected behavior: The changes should have been published. Alternative expected behavior: If any changes in the text editor weren’t saved, it should warn me before navigating away from the page (like it usually does for unsaved changes). Actual behavior: The changes are not saved from the text editor. Yet, the Republish button mysteriously appears with no changes to publish. Usually if you saved a unmodified page, the Republish button wouldn’t appear. Th** e frustrating part:** I discovered this bug while trying to fix a typo on a few different pages. Given the actual behavior, I thought the typo was fixed, and moved on with my work. It wasn’t until a co-worker pointed out the error was still there that discovered the change wasn’t saved properly.

Integration with Visual Website Optimizer

I know 5 years ago, Unbounce promoted some integration with Visual Website Optimizer. I’d like to propose further integration. You might be thinking, “just create your variations in VWO”. This would work if I’m making relatively minor changes (button text, image replacement…) but if I want to completely redesign my page, VWO’s visual editor will not work. Plus, if it did, I’d just have to replicate any changes with Unbounce if they win. Duplicate work is no fun! The Unbounce editor is far superior to VWO’s visual editor, so just let me keep making my variations there. Then I don’t need to replicate them. VWO has a feature for Split URL testing. I would love to use this feature with Unbounce variations. I have not figured out how to make it work with Unbounce, though. Ideally, I’d send my traffic to the Unbounce page like normal, but instead of Unbounce managing which page is displayed, VWO would control that using Split URL. VWO also comes with other great features lacking in Unbounce.

Pre-filling Form with URL Parameters doesn't always work

I’m converting all of my landing pages from an embedded form to a click-through form. Eventually, all landing pages will click-through to the same form page, so I’m using a URL parameter and hidden field to send data about the source landing page. In my case, the landing pages are for college programs, so I have a URL parameter for “program=” that I want to pre-fill the hidden field for “program”. Without this data, our lead nurturing process falls apart. Currently only a few pages are running the new format for testing. Of those few pages, 2 leads have already came through of the ~200 that did not have the URL parameters passed to the hidden fields. Once I have all the pages converted to the new format, I’m concerned this will become a bigger problem. I submitted a support ticket and we figured our 2 possible causes: Javascript is disabled for these users or jQuery not supported Hidden field is being overwritten by automatic form filler To solve the first problem, it might make sens

Add "Conversions per Day" Metric

To help with A/B Test creation, it would be extremely helpful to be able to sort pages by “Conversions per Day”. This way I can see the pages with the highest conversion volume and prioritize tests to those pages since they will reach the statistical confidence threshold faster.
