@helenmarguerite if ur page is not responsive by itself then I probably understand what u mean because i did something similar for a client not long ago. It was a monster script, css and layers over layers. In the end, from marketing perspective I did not think it is fruitful but client was stubborn. Anyway, couple of ways you can try - calculate window width to sustain the placement (I used Jquery to do that). Or you can also try using CSS viewports.
