Removing an image from a Box group

I’m trying to create a rollover box on an image, but it won’t work when the image keeps getting trapped inside a box. How do I force an image not to end up inside the box. I need to put it right over the box and every time I do, it gets folded into the box folder. Is there a way to keep them separated?
