Announcing Unbounce's AMP Alpha

Hey Tom, Matt here from the Unbounce AMP dev team. Thanks for the feedback! When we set out to do this project the goal was build faster unbounce pages. In order to do this we had to fundamentally change the way we render pages. Over the course of this project we’ve written a new rendering system from the ground up that’ll allow us to output smaller, more performant pages. Outputting AMP compatible html is essentially a byproduct (and one of the smaller parts) of the real goal which is faster and more optimized page rendering system. The changes Google is making to AMP isn’t as much about AMPhtml or the project but rather allowing pages that meet a certain speed criteria into Google’s amp ecosystem (like the top stories carousel and instant-load caching) even if they weren’t written in AMPhtml. If for whatever reason Google does decide to completely abandon the AMP project, we’re still in a great place because our new page renderer is going to continue offering a better, faster experie

Page Speed Initiative

Hey Phillip, I’m Matt a Front End Engineer here at Unbounce. Good news about the fonts, we’re completely revamping the way we handle fonts and it’s a project we’re actively working on. I can’t give any more details at the moment but keep an eye out for that. As for consolidating external javascript, published page speeds are on our radar as a high priority fix and this is one of the points that have come up. No word on this yet but it’s something we’re looking into. HTTP/2 can be a little tougher because we currently support back to IE9 where HTTP2 doesn’t exist so we need to make sure there won’t be any changes that negatively affect our published pages. Page speed performance overall is something we’re going to continue to address, particularly as we’re breaking into markets that don’t have the same high speed access as denser areas. We've Made Inline Text Editing Even Better! 🔥 🔥

Hey Seth, the feature is still in labs and has to be manually enabled. If you want to give it a shot, from your overview screen go to settings on the left, then Labs Features. Then enable “Inline Text Editor” and you can give it a shot 😀

Hey @Stefan Change the numbers to pennies, so if it was 1 & 79 it’ll now be 100 & 7900. Then in the script divide the output by 100. We’ll also have to add a method called “toFixed(2)” because javascript removes any trailing zeros. So the lines end up looking like this: $this.text("$" + (this.countNum / 100).toFixed(2)); (you can use the same code for both script lines) Cheers 🙂

Hey @Stefan , Open the text in the text editor and open the source. Look for a bit like this: <span class="counter" data-count="79" style="font-size: 68px;">1</span> The number in data-count (79 in this example) is the end and the number before the span close (the 1) is the start. The script simply works in either direction. To make it more money like find in the custom javascript area, these lines: $this.text(Math.floor(this.countNum)); and: $this.text(this.countNum); and change them to this: $this.text("$" + Math.floor(this.countNum)); and this (respectively): $this.text("$" + this.countNum); Then you’ll have dollar signs in front of the number: One more custom effect, in the custom js area, if you change the word ‘linear’ to the word ‘swing’ the animated countdown will slow down near the end before coming to a stop instead of counting down at a consistent pace. This one is purely cosmetic.

What does your browser testing process look like?

Hey, I work on the builder tool at unbounce so I thought I’d share a little of our own process. The two major aspects of our tool is the builder itself and the published pages. The builder only supports the latest browsers. In particular chrome, firefox, safari and edge. Most users of the builder are bit more savvy and tend to use these latest browsers. This allows us to take advantage of the latest technologies, like writing the builder refresh entirely with flexbox and put themeable skins on the roadmap. We all use macs / linux here at unbounce so we have access to all these browsers, with the exception of Edge… and hats off to Microsoft, they’ve been killing it with Edge. Most of the staff here uses Chrome, Firefox to a lesser degree and a couple on Safari so we usually catch any inconsistencies pretty quickly. We can also allow for small variations between browsers and OS’s as long as they’re non disruptive. Published pages tend to be a different beast. Since it has to look as clos

Speed up the image uploader

To add to this, we experimented with the possibility of dropping files right into the canvas and it looks like the builder can handle this sort of thing. No solid details on this yet but it could be a feature we’ll see in the near future.

Hey Julien, great feedback! We’ve actually built the new look to have interchangeable color options (theming) into it’s core. While it’s not a feature we’re launching the refresh with, it’s something that we have been investigating.
