Phone Number with Extension

I need to add a means for CTA submitters to provide a telephone extension after their US phone number.  I would really rather not add another field. And I appreciate phone field validation. Our CRM seems to accept phone numbers with a trailing x-101 just fine. Has anyone found any way around this?
