Image Thumbnail/Preview on Landing Page

Question

Is there a way to have an image appear as a thumbnail on the landing page, and if clicked a larger image displays? 
I know it can be done if the image goes to a link, but I was wondering if there was another way.

Almost like when someone fills out a form and it goes to the form submission page, theres that “pop up” page.
